The daughter of the legendary Héctor Lavoe said she was hurt after watching El Cantante.

The biopic of Héctor Lavoe featuring Jennifer López, 38, and Marc Anthony, 38, entitled El cantante is the talk of Puerto Rico. After the premiere in the island, Leslie Pérez, the daughter of the legendary artist said she was disappointed by the plot’s negative point of view.

"They didn’t touch upon him as a father. It’s the father part that I wanted to see when I gave them the information. Also, the left out the chemistry he had with his fans, that’s why Héctor Lavoe lives on,” as she put it to Primera hora, after lamenting the fact that the movie focuses only on the dark side of her father.

The movie shows the artist’s life with his second wife, Nilda Puchi Román, recreating the drama of the couple’s addiction to drugs. "I didn’t like that,” added Ms. Pérez, who also pointed out that she hasn’t expressed her opinion to Jennifer López, one of the movie’s producers.

Нда... Не самый лучший отзыв. :-? Но родственники умерших звезд редко бывают довольны подобными фильмами, если только сами не контролируют процесс съемок, как было с "Селеной".

Movie Review

3,5 out of 4

El Cantante (R)

by Mike Szymanski :

Hollywood.com Says

Fueled by powerful performances from real-life marrieds Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony, El Cantante is the Latin version of Walk the Line--only with better music.

Story

Beginning as a black-and-white documentary, we meet Puchi (Lopez), the wife of salsa master Hector Lavoe (Anthony), who is reluctantly being interviewed. "If you want someone else's version, then go get that," she quips to the documentary filmmaker. The film brightens to color when she reminisces about her two decades with the colorful singer from Puerto Rico. Puchi is a brash, outspoken woman, who knows the minute she meets Hector, he will become famous. And he does--rather quickly, too, after moving to New York and hooking up with bandleader and trombonist Willie Colon (Johnny Ortiz). Together, they revolutionize the sound and sensibility that redefined Latin music in the 1960s and ‘70s, becoming international sensations. But Lavoe also finds lots of other women and drugs along the way and ends up paying more attention to his vices than to his family, including his son, Tito, (Christopher Becerra). Puchi tries desperately to stop his downward spiral, but to no avail. Tragedy strikes when Lavoe dies prematurely in 1993 from complications related to AIDS.

Acting

Without a doubt, this is Lopez’s most stunning and talented performances to date, her version of Salma Hayek's Frida or Madonna's Evita. The actress is captivating and gorgeous in every scene, even when she's crying or drug-addled. In the good, loving moments between Puchi and Hector, it's easy to see how the real-life couple may interact. As an actor, however, Anthony is harder to gauge because he is known more as a singer. Still, he fully embodies the well-known salsa star and gives it his all. Neither he nor Lopez should be overlooked when Oscar time rolls around. The movie is so dominated by this couple's dysfunctional relationship that hardly anyone else is even noticeable—except for maybe Ortiz, who does a fine job as the guy who's like a brother to the singer but also spiraling out of control just as much as Hector.

Direction

Director/co-writer Leon Ichaso was handpicked by producers Anthony and Lopez. Ichaso, best known for writing and directing Pinero, another Latin hero who falls on hard times. To string the story together, he allows the documentary style to interrupt the memories of Lavoe's life. He creatively uses settings in Puerto Rico and Manhattan and recreates incredible musical performances, including one at Madison Square Gardens, which Puchi describes as the highlight of their lives. The music and dancing makes it impossible to avoid tapping a foot or nodding to the music, but the best moment of El Cantante is when singer Ruben Blades stages the actual moment he first sang "El Cantante" to his friend, Hector Lavoe. It’ll give you shivers.

If JLo’s career went catatonic after Gigli, then after El Cantante I think it’s probably safe to go ahead and pull the plug on it. There’s no coming out of this coma. El Cantante is the worst movie I’ve seen since the last Jennifer Lopez teams up with her man movie, and if someone manages to make a worse film this year that’ll be quite an accomplishment.

The movie pretends to be the story of famed Salsa singer Hector Lavoe, as told from the perspective of his longtime wife Puchi. Even though putting spouses together in movies almost always results in cinematic disaster, El Cantante does it anyway by casting real life husband and wife Marc Anthony and Jennifer Lopez as Hector and Puchi. I say the movie pretends to be told from the perspective of Puchi, because it only seems to stick to this premise when convenient. The movie pauses frequently to let Lopez as Puchi, in some sort of bizarre, mock interview introduce each scene. This gives Lopez a chance to showcase her complete lack of acting talent. The movie’s awful mock interviews with her play out like someone’s final exam in acting class, and JLo looks like she’s practicing to play the character in front of a mirror. Lopez actually seems to become a worse actress with each picture, and her work in El Cantante represents a new low. But the really annoying thing about all the screen time she’s given to smoke and stare at the camera is that it’s all for nothing since once the scene she’s introducing starts rolling the camera follows Hector everywhere, with or without Puchi. There’s no real attempt to tell the story from her perspective, because that sort of complexity is light-years beyond this script’s grasp.

If there were a bright spot in the film, it might have been Marc Anthony as Hector Lavoe. He certainly looks convincing, drugging and whoring, and shrugging his way through the picture. Unfortunately El Cantante never lets us get to know his character. The movie skips through his life with no real rhyme or reason. It’s like watching the Hector Lavoe story on fast forward, were the remote control being held by a blindfolded mental patient who randomly switches to slow motion based upon a random bubbling sensation in his bowels. There’s no point to any of it, and the movie skips through Hector’s life without letting us know who he is or why he’s important.

The film can’t even properly present his music, the man never sings an entire song and if there was any sort of process to coming up with his sound it’s ignored. Lavoe simply shows up in New York and goes to work singing. Well we presume he’s singing. We don’t see much of it really, though people keep talking about how great he is and soon for no particular reason and with almost no effort on his part, he’s instantly elevated to the status of Latin god.

The same is true of his relationship with Puchi, who just sort of shows up, and then they’re together. We don’t know why they’re together, there’s no attempt to figure out why Puchi sticks with him, or even to figure out what they have in common besides a mutual affection for heavy drugs. Though maybe it’s for the best. If JLo can’t handle the meager morsels El Cantante’s lousy script gives her, I shudder to think what she might have done to good material. The musician biopic craze dies right here; bury it to the left of Jennifer Lopez’s once significant career.
