Marc Anthony was on tour a decade ago doing so many back-to-back shows that he didn't know what city he was in. Sometimes the salsa crooner was so exhausted that he'd pass out. Now, as a 26-year veteran of the music business, he no longer frets about trying to do everything at once. Instead, he hand-picks projects as a way to enjoy life a little more. "I'm going through this period where I'm just proud," the singer said recently as he reflected on his career at age 38. "It's about finding yourself at a certain point in your life. I can't complain." Anthony performs at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in Irvine on Saturday in a show featuring popular Latin singers Laura Pausini and Marco Antonio Solis. The tour, which will go to 20 cities, including Chicago, New York and Miami, will benefit the Hispanic Scholarship Fund with a $100,000 donation. Anthony, who in his teens sang backup vocals for bands such as Menudo, took some time from preparing for the tour (he does plenty of crunches, he said) to talk about the concert, his latest film, a new CD, the tabloids and being married to Jennifer Lopez.
ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER: What does it take to mount a tour like this with three very well-known singers?
MARC ANTHONY: I'm doing a lot of push-ups. Laura and Marco are rehearsing. I'm just looking forward to the tour, and I'm proud to be bringing quality entertainment, if nothing else. The company is great. You're going to be blown away by the quality of the tour. You'll be getting greatest hits. It's definitely going to become a staple every year. These people I would bat for. I get to tour across the country and sing for America.
OCR: Why take on a tour like this?
ANTHONY: Part of the reason for this tour is for selfish reasons. I get to sit on the side of the stage and see the other singers. Last year's tour was one of the most successful tours regardless of genre.
OCR: Who's on your wish list for next year's installment of the tour?
ANTHONY: I'd rather not. There's a time for that, but I definitely have that list.
OCR: What did you learn from last year's tour?
ANTHONY: I learned that things can be born from the right place. None of us did it for money. We just wanted to offer a good evening of quality music and a chance to work with people I admire musically. I was born in the industry and things have to be born for the right reason. If you go into it saying you want so much more money, you're done. In October I will be in this business for 26 years.
OCR: You've also been working on a new film with Jennifer Lopez. What's going on with "El Cantante" (about salsa legend Hector Lavoe)?
ANTHONY: It's unbelievable. I just saw it, and it was just picked up by the Toronto Film Festival. That's huge. Another one of those projects that was born in the right place. This is one of my proudest moments, and you know I'm not one to talk about my own things like that.
OCR: What do you want people to know about Hector Lavoe?
ANTHONY: I'm not going to be the poster child for Hector's issues. I almost see him as a sacrificial lamb. When he opened his mouth, stuff happened. He inspired generations and changed the industry. He had such a huge influence. This is a story that had to be told for many reasons, what he went through personally. He had so much pain. The more he grew as an artist, the more he sang as a person. He just had to be a musician. At the end of the day he's a human being, but there's another side. The story speaks for itself.
OCR: What was it like to work with Jennifer?
ANTHONY: She's a consummate professional. I learned so much for her. What she stood for taught me more about her. My affinity and respect skyrocketed for Jennifer. We've worked on short films and videos so it's not the first time we've worked together.
OCR: You've done several films. Are you planning to do more?
ANTHONY: I have four big offers on the table, but it's a matter of scheduling. You find that life is more important than anything, so I'm in the middle of pondering.
OCR: I interviewed singer-songwriter Estefano not too long ago. You've collaborated with him previously and it seems like you and Jennifer have a strong friendship with him. Why is that friendship important to you?
ANTHONY: Something happens when you have been doing this for a long time. I've known Estefano for 15 years. We're music-industry survivors. I have nothing but respect. From the second I met him I knew I was safe with him and he was safe with me. It's like a fraternity. I have trusted him with Jennifer's (upcoming) project.
OCR: Tell me about Jennifer's new album.
ANTHONY: Fantastic. You have no clue. You know I'm not a hype machine, but there are things I'm so proud of, and this is one of them. You'll be seeing something in September.
OCR: You and Jennifer seem to make headlines often. What's the attention like?
ANTHONY: Don't read anything. If you're going to judge me, sleep in my bed, walk in my shoes and then maybe you can draw some conclusions. Some writers don't realize that what they write will affect your family. There are rogue writers who call themselves writers. No fact checking. Nothing. They have to be held accountable. If you write about anybody, you have to be smart with what you do.
OCR: You have a new greatest-hits album, "Sigo Siendo Yo," out this month. What's it like to have this body of work behind you?
ANTHONY: I wake up proud. I look at my (about a dozen) previous albums and they represent that I've done something. The music represents certain periods of my life and what I was going through at that time. There is some new music on the greatest-hits album. I'm proud of "Lo Que No Di" ("What I Didn't Give"). It's really strong vocally, but it's really about how the song was born. It's the purest place I've ever been. Music is born, and for me it's not about doing something as part of a fad. It's bigger than that. I don't live to work, I work to live, and there's something to that.
OCR: You like to reach out to your fans. You were recently part of the New York City Puerto Rican Day Parade and some of the tour's proceeds go to charity. Why do you enjoy giving back?
ANTHONY: So many people along the way have given in their own way through their support and understanding. I use every opportunity I get to give back. In my career I've played for at least 10 million people. I couldn't possibly call them all, but there are ways to give back. I am fortunate.
OCR: What has that journey been like for you?
ANTHONY: Ten years ago I was busy building the foundation. It's like I've been studying for 10 years at Harvard. I learned from those years when I couldn't breathe and would pass out from exhaustion. My first tour went to 54 cities and I did five shows a week. With this tour I am looking forward to being on stage with the best, and I get to host. This is a very exciting time in my life.
